Back in the day, people used to ask me, “What’s a bitcoin backed by?” and I’d shrug my shoulders. “I didn’t really know,” I’d tell them. We’d share a laugh and agree that it doesn’t matter how bad inflation gets in America. The dollar works because I can hold it in my fat greasy hands.

The US army can enforce the dollar. The government can enforce the dollar. Cryptos, on the other hand, are like tulips, or beanie babies, or pet rocks, or tickle me Elmo’s, or any other flash in the pan fad that people climb over each other to get, only to realize have no real value.

Obviously, I’m joking here. In reality, Bitcoin is grounded in physical reality the same way that gold is grounded in physical reality. This is because of the Bitcoin miners. Miners are the DNA of the Bitcoin network and they do more than just maintain everything.

Miners use their energy, computing power (and graphics cards), to “carve transactions into stone” on the blockchain. In our Applebees example, this is like creating an entry in the ledger where everyone must sign off on what you’ve written with no room for alteration or correction! It’s fucking beautiful.

Anyone can create a new cryptocurrency today in this young oversaturated crypto market, but none will have the network effect or “proof of work” that Bitcoin has. Bitcoin isn’t just any cryptocurrency, it’s the cryptocurrency.
